With warm weather here at last, it’s time to start planning ahead for summer vacations and weekend getaways. If you’re thinking of taking a road trip this summer, taking time out to prepare your vehicle first can help you stay safer and avoid collisions.

In this blog post from the accident repair team at Suburban Auto Body in Minnesota, we’re sharing our pre-trip checklist to keep your family safe from danger while on the road. When you need auto body repair, give us a call.

Follow this checklist to get your car road-ready before your next trip:

1.   Get your oil changed.

Stay on top of the mileage in your vehicle and be sure to schedule an oil change if you’re due for one or close to the point of needing your next oil change. If your car isn’t due for an oil change, check your coolant and oil levels just to stay on the safe side.

2.   Have your brake pads checked.

Make sure your brakes are in good working condition before you hit the highway to avoid a fender bender or serious collision. If it’s been more than 50,000 miles since your brake pads were last checked or if your brakes squeal, it’s time to have them replaced.

3.   Check your brake lights.

Have someone help you check your brake lights. If you’re alone, you can check your brake lights by backing up near a wall after dark. If your brake lights are working, the wall should light up with a red glow.

4.   Prepare your emergency kit.

Staying prepared in case of an emergency with a well-stocked emergency kit. Make sure your jumper cables are in your vehicle along with a working flashlight. Additionally, keep an extra car phone charger handy and make sure your phone remains charged while you’re away from home.

5.   Check your documents.

Be sure to place the most up-to-date insurance information available in your glove box or console and make sure your license is current before you take off. It’s also a good idea to make copies of our information before leaving in case of emergency.
